A Big Bang: Krakatoa 1883

12/05/2021

Our whole Earth was in a pretty normal state

Then 140 years ago a volcano exploded, wait-

On the 27 August 1883,

Krakatoa spewed out ash and gas and sank into the sea

The Earth began to cool, a tsunamic caused misrule and lots of weather tools

Recorded dips in temperature.

We know volcanoes change climate on a global scale,

But in Australia it's not such a clear tale.

We're looking at model simulations, reanalysis and observations,

Decoding climate history, unravelling the mysteries

That all started with a big bang!

Climate model simulations of the past 200 years,

Show post-eruption cooling that is extremely severe.

Rainfall drops too on a global scale,

but in Australia the signal's harder to unveil.

If I've sparked your interest and you want to see how I decoded

What happened in Australia when Krakatoa exploded,

Then please stay tuned for updates on my progression,

And always feel free to ask me any questions!

Lines adapted from "The History of Everything" song (Bing Bang Theory theme).
